How does Split Tunnel function?

Split tunneling is a network configuration used in VPNs that allows a user to access both internal resources over a secure tunnel while allowing external traffic to bypass the tunnel. In this context, when client traffic for internal resources is redirected through the tunnel, it means that only the data meant for the organization's internal network is sent through the secure connection.

This provides a balance between security and performance since it enables employees to access necessary internal applications securely without sending all internet traffic (such as browsing or accessing public-facing websites) through the VPN tunnel. Consequently, this can also improve connection speeds for external activities, as non-sensitive traffic does not load the secure channel.

For instance, if a user is accessing company servers or intranet while also browsing the web, the split tunnel approach ensures that only the data going to the company resources is secured and sent through the tunnel, while general internet activities remain direct, thereby optimizing resource usage and maintaining security for sensitive information.
